Unlike other measuring tools and instruments, a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) enables manufacturers to measure key aspects – height, width, and depth – of 3D items accurately and quickly.
The CMMs measure the complex geometries of a 3D object by identifying the discrete points in its surface. They sense the discrete points on an object’s surface using a variety of probes – optical, mechanical, white light, and laser beams The CMM measurement service providers set and control the position of the probe either manually or using a computer. Some CMMs operate based on a contact model, while others use non-contact models.
The conventional CMMs using contact models measure the 3D object with touch probes. The touch probes measure the height, width, and depth of the objects using a spherical object. On the other hand, the new-age CMMs using non-contact models measure the 3D objects using cameras or laser beams.
