Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D Printing

What is SLS 3D Printing Technology?

As a commonly used additive manufacturing technology, selective laser sintering (SLS) produces a variety of models, patterns, objects, and products by using sinter powdered plastic material. As its name suggests, the 3D printing technology creates solid structures by converting nylon-based powders into solid plastic using laser beams. The nylon-based powders help manufactures to 3D print products and prototypes which are stronger and durable.

The SLS 3D printers produce both products and prototypes using a variety of materials – plastic, glass and ceramics. Many enterprises opt for SLS 3D printing technology to produce products or parts in small quantities using high quality materials. SLS 3D printers are used widely by the aerospace industries to build prototypes for airplane parts without investing extra time and resources. The enterprises further modify and customize the prototypes simply by changing the CAD/CAM based design diagram.

How Does SLS 3D Printing Work?

SLS 3D printing technology produces objects and models using powdered polymer build material.  The SLS 3D printers are designed with a re-coating tool which transfers the fresh powder materials into the process chamber. They use a powerful laser to heat the powder after scanning a cross-section of the 3D model. A solid structure will be formed as the particles are fused together mechanically. Once the first layer is formed, the build platform will descend into the build chamber by one layer.

The re-coating tool will apply a layer of fresh powder on the first layer. The laser will scan the next cross-section of the model to the printed. The procedure will repeat till the product or part is 3D printed fully. The printer will leave the model inside the build chamber to cool down and harden. The printer will clean the 3D-printed model to remove excess powder after removing it from the build chamber.

Why Should You Opt for SLS 3D Printing Technology?

No Support Needed

SLS, unlike other 3D printing technologies, do not require any support structure. The powders make it easier for manufacturers to 3D print complex designs and geometries without providing any support structure.

Speed Up Processes

SLS 3D printers help manufactures to speed up both prototyping and production. In addition to being a faster additive manufacturing technology, SLS accelerates prototyping using powerful lasers. The laser has the capability to scan and fuse the powders rapidly.

Better Quality Output

SLS enables manufacturers to use a durable and versatile material like nylon. The manufacturers can use a high-quality thermoplastic like nylon to create products and prototypes that look and function just like the products made using conventional manufacturing techniques.

Ready-to-use Products

The engineers can use the SLS printer to produce prototypes during the designing phase and end-user products during the production phase. Hence, they do not need extra time to test the end-user products. Also, they can easily customize and modify the end-user products by making relevant changes to the prototype.

Types of Materials are used in SLS 3D Printing?

While using SLS 3D printing technologies, manufacturers and printers often opt for nylon due to its strong, stable, flexible, and lightweight nature. Also, nylon is effective in making the product or prototype durable by eliminating the impact of heat, water, dirt, chemicals, and UV light. However, the manufacturers also have the option to use a variety of materials – nylon, alumide, carbonmide and PEBA – according to nature and the needs of the object to be 3D printed.
